This brings the nostalgia of "Edward Scissorhands" and the creepiness/sadness of "Frankenstein", as described in the summary. At times, I was so wrapped up in the story, I couldn't stop reading. For the most part, the writing was interesting and clear, with great description. There was a mix of modern with the past, romance and adventure and a dark aspect that builds throughout the story. My struggle was with the repetition of the storyline and inconsistencies in the personalities of the main characters. The progress of the story was kind of like, I'm strong enough...wait, no I'm not...wait, yes I am...hold on, no I'm not. Or we belong together...no, we don't...yes, we do...no, we don't. It just seemed like the characters couldn't make up their minds and instead of building suspense and drama, it kind of dragged along.
A lot of things drew me in and kept me there. I really thought the story had some neat ideas. The ending was pretty good and could be open to interpretation. Some adjustments with the pacing and maybe different types of conflict could help, but overall, I would recommend giving it a chance.

Frankie Monster Rae Hachton 9780988294424 Books Reviews
I have said it before Rae is a talented author, if she puts her mind to a certain theme - she draws the entire world in colors and textures and images to match. What I loved about this book is that we learn about human insecurities and how to deal. How each of us deserve so much better. There is romance, danger, the ugly, the dark, the fun, action and horror. What through it for me over the top - I loved the ending.
I was recently gifted with the opportunity to beta read Frankie's Monster for Rae Hachton. And when I say gifted...that's exactly what I mean.
The level of raw emotion and the depth of feeling that this book portrays, had me feeling as if I owed Rae a debt - one that I would never be able to repay. The story transported me, taking me into a world of art, romanticism, beauty, violence, macabre, terror, and loss. Together those things made up one of the most moving and intelligent books I've read in a very long time.
Rae reached into her soul to write this book and it shows. 5 stars for making the monster feel!
Loved it, related to it. GREAT! Totally different and offbeat. I'm a brand new fan! Don't miss this little gem!
I was intrigued enough to get this book but the first couple of chapters had me scratching my head thinking..."Uh what"...then i got into it. about three quarters of the way it became absurd. I finished it simply because I have never left a book incomplete. overall the book makes no sense to me.
This was a very interesting book. It wasn't written all that well, but it was an awesome story line. I didn't want to to end.
Ok. I've read a few of the other reviews of this book, but there's a notable part of it that I feel has been ignored. That's the unfortunate subject of plagiarism. More on this below.
I picked up Frankie's Monster while it was selling for free, no doubt to drum up some publicity. At first it was a pretty atmospheric little tale, though obviously from a writer still learning the process. It's the story of a girl who goes to a spooky old mansion to steal some stuff her abusive boyfriend can sell for drug money. While in the mansion she meets Johnny Hart, who was created by a mad scientist's neglected daughter as her sex toy and companion, then locked away when she found human companionship instead. Now that she's gone, Johnny is free to roam about the mansion and fit the brooding artist stereotype. The brokenness of the main character, Francesca (Frankie) calls to him, and thus begins the love story.
However, it quickly becomes obvious that this "love story" is more of a poisoned relationship than anything else. Johnny is constantly trying to impose his will on Frankie and force her out of her current life, which is terrible. The difference is that he isn't trying to help her get her life together, he's just substituting one form of servitude for another, trying to create a world that revolves only around him. He's constantly swinging back and forth between "Oh, I love her so much" to "Dump the bitch" the moment Frankie doesn't bow to his will. Frankie's no powerhouse character either; she states in the first few chapters her history of sexual abuse like she's reading the back of a cereal box, giving us no understanding of how these things affected her personally. It's just "my life sucks, but I was abused, so it's not my fault". It's a classic case of telling instead of showing. We never see how these things really affect Frankie. We never feel her pain over it. It's just an excuse for why her life is so terrible (though now that I think about it, it could be used as an excuse for why she gets into this toxic relationship with Johnny, except that it is presented as the height of romance).
The story quickly derails into a mess of break-ups and reunifications, to the point where you can't even feel any of the supposed "love"; just two people clawing bloody handfuls out of each other and claiming its romance. And every sentence is drenched in this pseudo-poetic melodrama that is supposed to be deep and soulful, but really only sounds like a pair of teenagers dramatically declaring their "twue wuv" weeks before the breakup.
But that isn't why I'm writing this review. No. If that had been all, Frankie's Monster would have just been an ebook to be read through once and discarded from my hard drive. The reason why I'm writing this review is because the author has stolen other people's work to use in her book. I'm going to quote the passage from the book that made this clear to me
"I want to tear through you. Stuff you in my mouth. Hold you down and tear you open. Live inside you. Grind against your bones [...]"
Romantic, huh? Well, if you're an alternative music fan like me, maybe you'll recognize these lyrics from the song "The Horror of Our Love" by Ludo.
I want you stuffed into my mouth
hold you down and tear you open, live inside you -
love, I'd never hurt you.
But I'll grind against your bones until our marrows mix
I will eat you slowly...
That right there? That's straight-up plagiarism. This was what completely broke the book for me. Now I was looking at every pseudo-poetic line of garbage, wondering if they really came from the author attempting to be deep, or attempting to pass off the work of others as her own. And I'm not kidding when I say that exclamations like this make up roughly eighty percent of the book. It doesn't matter if only that one passage was plagiarized (though I sincerely doubt it) the moment this author stole someone else's work, she lost all credibility in my eyes. And just to add to the utter gaul, I already had the song on my mind, because one of the earlier chapters in the book is NAMED "The Horror of Our Love", almost like the writer put it in there just to see if anyone would notice. You can be inspired by the song, you can name your chapter after it, but the moment you steal lyrics and put them in there without drawing attention to the fact that you're quoting a song, you're nothing more than a thief and deserve to be treated as such.
Up until that passage, I considered the book convoluted, but not particularly offensive. Just something I picked up for free to give it a try. But now, I consider it trash. For a book that talks so much about the value of "art" and "being true to oneself" this author has no problem stealing from the work's of others. So I guess it's appropriate that the book is named "Frankie's Monster", because it's an abomination pieced together from other sources. If I could give this book less than one star, you'd better believe that I would.
