The 'unexpected' comes from my only discovering the book was coming out the day before publication. Barker is always a treat, even if she does immediately go to the top of the 'most individual novel of the year' lists.
A mysterious, perhaps mystical event occurred in Sussex in the 70s. About ten years later some of those affected revisit that event, and the novel charts it's long-term effects. Miracles occur - or are there rational explanations?
The body of the story is carried by two alternating narrators, one male, one female, although their exchanges are interrupted by a parrot and by a man uncomfortably aware he's in a Nicola Barker novel. Barker's style won't be to everyone's taste, as it is wildly indulgent, but it's random precision is a trick very hard to pull off.
The book is embarrass-yourself-by-snorting-with-laughter-on-public-transport funny in places, but adds up to a serious consideration of the religious experience. If you liked Darkmans, you will want to know that this is better.

This was an unexpected treat - I usually know about books from my favourite authors well in advance but this one blindsided me - because it is not published in Canada yet (argh). I did get a hold of it though, and...

As to the plot and what this book is about - I hate spoilers, so if you want some idea, I will advise you to read the blurb from the jacket to get a general idea. The setting was a real draw for me and I spent a few hours on Google earth trying to figure out where Pett Level is and what a Cliff End is (literal or figurative?).

I loved this book, and read it in a 36 hour period literally whenever I could. Brilliant writing, funny and endearing characters (even when they are debatable as good "people"), and moving - I'd recommend this to anyone who likes their recreating to include soul and life and love.
