Jon “Slick” Elder is a professional poker player with black belts in assorted martial arts who moonlights as an “Equalizer” who helps people find justice (and vengeance) when the authorities fail. After serving up some street justice to a guy who got away with brutally raping a 12 year old girl, he’s having breakfast in a sleepy Arizona diner when the racist Sheriff comes in to arrest a Mexican day laborer... and beats him almost to death while people are having their morning coffee. Because the laborer, Pedro, did nothing to warrant this beating, Slick objects... and gets a beating of his own.He wakes up in jail, and before you can say Rambo or Billy Jack or Reacher, that racist Sheriff and his men realize they have screwed with the wrong guy. Slick - a champion of those who have been screwed over in this world - decides to bring down the Sheriff, find out if Pedro is innocent or guilty of the crime he is charged with, and basically clean up the whole corrupt county.
Exciting, well written, and with a surprisingly emotional romantic subplot, BULLETS delivers the goods. Great fight scenes, shoot outs, car chases... and a clever plot that just keeps peeling back layer after layer of small town corruption. I especially liked the plotting - there was a great clue planted in a scene that payed off big time later in the story. So many stories these days have plotting that doesn’t stand up to a second reading, but when something is revealed in the story it has always been set up earlier and is completely logical.
From the opening scene, this is a fun page turner that had me up past my bedtime reading to find out what happened next. I hope this is the first in a series about Slick, because he’s an interesting and believable character... who kicks ass.

BULLETS Jon "Big Slick" Elder Book 1 edition by Elijah Drive Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A black man in a racist town; what could possibly go wrong?
"Slick" is a hired killer. He ends up in a racist town after "taking care" of a problem. The Sheriff, Ted Rawlings, and his mininons, Bower and Collins are racists through and through. Slick winds up in jail (after a good old-fashion beating by the deputies). This came after an innocent immigrant (Pedro) is beaten first, which Slick witnesses. Slick's buddies rescued him just in time, and Slick decides to stick around to get justice for Pedro (who later dies). Of course, none of the racists cops like this, and they do everything in their power to run him off. Along the way, Slick joins forces with the beautiful Assistant District Attorney, Camilla Leon, to clear Pedro's name, who had been arrested for murder.
All the characters were well-developed, and I felt that they were real people. That's how good the writing was. Truthfully, I even liked the racist characters in the book, especially Orville and his gang. They were a hoot!
There were a lot of racist words being spewed in the book, and a lot of cursing, but I can understand why; it made the book more believable.
There were some sad parts, suspensful parts, and a lot of funny parts. I was truly sadden by the death of one of the characters in the book who played a key role in helping Slick.
Doris (a minor character), shook herself out of her funk, and took care of business near the end of the book. I'm not giving away what happened, and I LOVED what she did.
This was the first book I read from the author, and I can't wait to read another "Slick" story.
Jon Elder is a professional poker player and part of a team of killers who revenge serious injuries to little people. We meet him as he eliminates a rapist, who had assaulted and badly injured a 12-year-old girl and was now planning the death by torture of the men who sought redress. The child was Latina, the rapist white, and Jon Elder is black and 6 foot 4.
A day later, while Jon is having breakfast in a cafe, the local sheriff and several deputies walk in, beat the man (Latino) sitting next to him to death claiming he was a murderer, and arbitrarily arrest Jon for being black. Jon avoids trumped up charges with the help of a friend, an excellent lawyer, and a video recording of the entire arrest sequence made by his phone and automatically transferred to a cloud.
Released from jail, Jon decides to find out who was murdered, and why the the young Latino had been fingered as the killer.
As Jon delves into the details it becomes apparent that there have been several other related murders and a greater number of people are in danger than originally believed.
The story gets exceedingly ugly before it is resolved, leaving me with a feeling of horror when realizing that all this could actually happen.
Just when you think you will never read another great story comes along this well-written, page-turning thriller with strong dialogue, eclectic characters that are unforgettable and characters you would love to send to an ever ending abyss. Jon “Big Slick” Elder is a character who is a nonconformist, stands his ground, is observant, disciplined and someone you would want in your corner if you ever needed a protector, but he can be lethal if warranted, and when you include Tommy Olson, Camilla Leon, Navajo Joe Stomcloud, and Melvin Hayes, you get a gripping, cat and mouse tale that exposes what the country looks like today, namely ethnic conflicts, racism, police wrongdoings, misogyny, and a flawed justice system, where stereotypical assumptions are made based on the color of one’s skin, and laws are bent to shield the guilty. The backdrop is Bendijo, a town in Arizona, which makes for lots of twists and turns, secrets and lies, manipulation, betrayal, murder, shocking revelations and an ending that will shock you to the core. The author does an excellent job at exposing and fusing in past factual brutal acts committed by people who are supposed to uphold the law and protect its citizens, reminding us that you reap what you sow.
